I highly recommend starting with Practical Malware Analysis. Not only does it guide you step by step with info and labs how to get the job done, but also points out what stuff you need to know in order to continue in this direction or that.

I've read part of Practical Reverse Engineering too; its a good book, but I still beleive the PMA is the best book you'll find; especially if you're not willing to pay for a Blackhat Malware Analysis course which is toooooo expensive.

You have to learn assembly language and then follow Lena Tutorials for basic reverse engineering. IDA Pro books will do good too. But you can get used to stuffs like that with googling for blogs with reversing application or malware of your interest.
