I am very interested in learning how to pick apart malware, rootkits, viruses and the like for analysis. How would someone go about learning to do this without going to college for it ?

Is their any specifc subjects, books, websites anyone would recommend to understand things like rootkits, hooks, how to do memory dumps and spot the malicious code etc ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has always been an interest of mine, just can't seem to find the starting point

I would suggest Offensive Security -> www.offensivesecurity.com. It's an amazing course that teaches you everything you need to know to use BT4.
